Biography

Clifton Lewis, M.D., has been board certified since 1991 in adult cardiac surgery. He has special interest in the treatment of valvular heart disease and especially in minimally invasive and robotic approaches to valvular operations. Dr. Lewis is considered pioneer of robotic mitral valve surgery. He has performed more than 12,000 open-heart operations, 2,500 minimally invasive procedures, 5,500 valve operations and 1,200 robotic procedures.

Dr. Lewis received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine in 1983. He then went on to complete an internship and general surgery residency at UAB, serving as chief resident in 1987-1988. Dr. Lewis then completed a residency in cardiovascular and peripheral vascular surgery at Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas, training with Denton A. Cooley, M.D. After training, he entered practice at Sarasota Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgical Associates in Sarasota, Fl. In 2009, Dr. Lewis relocated to Birmingham and joined Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons, P.C., and in 2013, he joined Princeton Cardiothoracic Surgery. In 2019, Dr. Lewis was recruited to the UAB Structural Heart & Valve Program.
