During their clinical experience at the Huntsville campus, our students can expect a wide variety of hospital-based training, as well as clinical opportunities unique to Huntsville.
Our primary teaching facilities are Huntsville Hospital and the UAB Huntsville Regional Medical Center.
As part of the third-year curriculum students are required to rotate through seven clinical clerkships.
Family Medicine
In partnership with the UAB Huntsville Family Medicine Residency Program and UAB Huntsville Family Medicine Clinic, students spend four weeks rotating with faculty and residents in the clinic, hospital and nursing home. This can be followed up by an additional four week Acting Internship in Rural Medicine with a rural preceptor in the North Alabama area.
Neurology
During this four week rotation, students split their time between inpatient hospital-based neurology and seeing patients in the outpatient clinical setting.
Psychiatry
Students will spend four weeks split on the outpatient setting in a community-based practice at UAB Huntsville Psychiatry Clinic and Wellstone Behavioral Health. They also see patients through hospital-based consults.
Internal Medicine
The eight-week Internal Medicine clerkship gives students the opportunity to work directly with the UAB Huntsville Internal Medicine Residency Program on the general medicine service at Huntsville Hospital, as well as some outpatient clinical experience at the UAB Huntsville Internal Medicine Clinic.
Surgery
During this eight week rotation students are trained in general and trauma/critical care surgery. They also have the opportunity to rotate in a specialty of their choosing, including, but not limited to orthopedics, vascular surgery, ophthalmology, urology, neurosurgery, and ENT.
Pediatrics
Students can expect to spend the eight weeks of their pediatric rotation in an outpatient setting at the UAB Huntsville Pediatrics Clinic. They also spend time on the inpatient pediatric service at the Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children, the newborn nursery and a community-based pediatric outpatient clinic.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
This eight-week rotation gives students a comprehensive experience in OB/GYN, exposing them to outpatient practice clinic as well as deliveries and surgery at Huntsville Hospital.
Electives and Special Topics
In addition to the required clerkships, Huntsville campus students have the opportunity to take electives and special topic courses in a wide range of specialties and sub-specialties through our partnerships with community based preceptors. There are a wealth of other learning opportunities with co-enrolled courses, Grand Rounds and M&M conferences, and bioethics discussions. A weekly dean’s conference provides a venue for additional educational sessions and sharing experiences that further prepare students for their future in medicine.
With over 180 community based preceptors and countless elective and acting internship opportunities, the UAB Huntsville Campus offers a comprehensive experience for fourth-year students as well.
