Ronit Elk, PhD, (Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) and colleagues have collaborated with community members to develop a culturally appropriate approach to palliative care. Their study will compare the culturally-based intervention to standard protocols to determine its impact on patient quality of life and the burden of care for caregivers. Enrollment began last month in three rural hospitals in Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina. We look forward to learning more about this exciting research!

February is National Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year, approximately one woman every minute! The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health for this very reason. In response to the NIH focus on training for rigor, reproducibility & transparency, scientists at UAB developed a gamified solution using the Kaizen platform which has been engaging roughly 50 people every quarter for the past two years. Now, James Willig, MD, MSPH (Professor, Infectious Diseases) and collaborators in the CCTS have shared this learning tool with the national CTSA partner network through Edge for Scholars. This expansion means that this "painless, fun, and potentially rewarding path to score R2T training" will help a nationwide audience meet their NIH training requirements. Kudos to the entire team—especially content creator Professor Dave Redden, PhD (SOPH)— for their collaborative learning innovation!

The Department is delighted to announce a first-of-its-kind clinic at UAB for the evaluation and management of patients with severe asthma and airway hyper-reactivity. Pulmonologists Drs. Jennifer Trevor, Miranda Curtiss, and Ravi Virdi will see patients on Thursday afternoon in TKS. In addition to traditional inhalers and medications, Drs Trevor and Curtiss will also evaluate patients for novel biologic agents and enrollment in clinical trials, and Dr. Virdi will assess patients for bronchial thermoplasty.
