As the volume of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 reached an all-time high, the Internal Medicine Residency Program implemented a new inpatient team to help manage patient flow in the hospital. The Tinsley Harrison "Surge Team" currently carries a full load of 20 non-COVID patients daily, helping to lighten the load for other hospital teams. The all-volunteer crew is staffed by residents Jordan Tannenbaum, Robert Camacho, Harpreet Arora, Tylan Magnussen, Kelly McMaster, Reed LaHaye, Elizabeth Babin and Chance Phelps, along with attending physicians Win Williams, Rebekah Weil and Carlos Estrada. Kudos to all on this collaborative and important work in caring for our patients.

UAB's COVID Respiratory Clinic has implemented a new telehealth device to help physicians remotely keep track of their patients' progress. Turner Overton, MD (Professor, Infectious Diseases) and Dr. Irfan Asif (Chair, Family & Community Medicine) describe the monitor as easy to wear, similar to a watch. The hope is that the new technology will help keep physicians informed of oxygenation and other vital signs, allowing for timely and appropriate care interactions.

Cooper Pierce was just 13 years old when his doctors diagnosed him with pulmonary hypertension. He compares the condition to really bad asthma that would leave him breathless and blue from climbing a single flight of stairs. Thanks to the extraordinary care from doctors at UAB, including our own DOM Pulmonary Hypertension Team, Cooper was able to receive a heart, double lung transplant. Today, he's living his best life as a UAB student, and hopes his story will inspire others

The UAB MedEd Moments faculty development video series is now online! These brief, high quality videos are designed to enhance clinician-educator skills in five important areas: Setting Expectations, Giving Feedback, Teaching Procedures, Improving the Learning Climate, and Enhancing Evaluations. The series not only fulfills an ACGME requirement, but also helps faculty and learners be successful in the medical training environment. Kudos to our talented MedEd team for developing this free and accessible resource for all medical educators.

Troy Randall, PhD (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) and colleagues conducted groundbreaking research on an intranasal COVID-19 vaccine candidate, AdCOVID. Their mouse pre-clinical study, performed in collaboration with biopharmaceutical company Altimmune, showed strong serum neutralizing activity and potent mucosal IgA immunity in the respiratory tract. Based on these findings, AdCOVID is expected to be advanced to a Phase 1 safety and immunogenicity study in the fourth quarter of this year.
