Welcome!
Dear Prospective Applicants,
We’re so glad you’re here. Choosing a residency program is a big decision. It will shape not only your training, but also your relationships, your confidence, and your sense of home. As chief residents of the UAB Child Neurology program, we want you to know: UAB is a place where you’ll be seen, supported, and challenged to grow in every direction. What sets this program apart isn’t just the strong clinical training or the access to outstanding faculty and facilities, it’s how UAB takes the time to know you. Not just as a future pediatric neurologist, but as a person, a teammate and a friend.
We still remember the handwritten thank-you notes during interviews and the phone call from Dr. Novara after Match Day. Those weren’t just kind gestures, they reflected the culture of UAB, where connection and kindness are part of the foundation. From the first days of pediatrics training, we felt like part of a family. Even when transitioning into adult neurology, which can feel intimidating at first, we were met with mentorship, encouragement, and a true sense of belonging. We’ve made lifelong friends along the way, and our neurology family has only grown. As child neurology residents, we’ve found our home. The faculty here have helped us develop clinical skills, supported our academic interests, and pushed us to grow not just as doctors, but as people.
Over the years, we've had countless moments that reminded us why UAB is so special, moments that go beyond what you’ll find on a website or in a slide during interview season. These are the small, unexpected experiences that reflect the heart of this program’s culture. I (Jordy) will never forget when one of our attendings, Dr. Ness, saw me walking in the neighborhood with my wife and sister. She made a U-turn and immediately invited us to a concert that evening at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater. We had a great time. It was spontaneous, thoughtful, and such a perfect example of what makes this program stand out.
Similarly, I (Katie) can recall many moments with several of our faculty in which they have taken time to have a heart-to-heart conversation or pep-talk, give me both life and career advice, and chat about anything. Life continues to happen during five years of residency and it has been essential having a team behind me who supports me, encourages me, and treats me like family. The UAB Child Neurology team truly cares about us as individuals.
We value collaboration, wellness, and curiosity. We believe excellence in medicine doesn’t come at the expense of kindness, balance, or joy, and we try to lead with those values every day. As chiefs, our role is to advocate for you, support your goals, and be a bridge between residents and faculty. Whether you're looking for research opportunities, strong mentorship, a place to raise a family, or someone to grab tacos with after a long shift, we’re here for all of it.
From seeing the crape myrtles bloom in spring, to hiking Vulcan Trail on a breezy afternoon, to gathering at Artwalk or weekend farmers markets, it’s these moments that remind us how thankful we are to call Birmingham home. Most of all, we’re excited to meet you. To hear your story. To show you what makes this place so special, and maybe even welcome you as our future co-resident.
Warmly, Dr. Jordy Roque Dr. Katherine Barnes Chief Residents
