During their clinical experience at the Montgomery campus, our students can expect a wide variety of hospital and community-based training, as well as clinical opportunities unique only to Montgomery.
Our primary teaching facilities are Baptist Medical Center’s South, East, and Prattville locations, Crossbridge Behavioral Health, the Institute for Patient Safety and Medical Simulation, as well as many community-based practices in Montgomery and the surrounding area.
As part of the third-year curriculum students are required to rotate through seven clinical clerkships.
Family Medicine
In partnership with the Baptist Family Medicine Residency Program and Family Medicine Clinic, students spend four weeks rotating with faculty and residents in the clinic, hospital and nursing home. This is followed up by an additional four week Acting Internship in the Selma Family Medicine Clinic.
Neurology
During this four week rotation, students split their time between inpatient hospital-based neurology and seeing patients in the outpatient clinical setting.
Psychiatry
Students will spend four weeks split on the inpatient service at Crossbridge Behavioral Health and an outpatient setting in a community-based practice, as well as seeing hospital-based consults.
Internal Medicine
The eight-week Internal Medicine clerkship gives students the opportunity work directly with the UAB Montgomery Internal Medicine Residency Program on the general medicine service at Baptist South, as well as an outpatient clinical experience at the UAB Montgomery Ambulatory Care Clinic.
Surgery
During this eight week rotation students are trained in general, trauma/critical care and vascular surgery. They also have the opportunity to rotate in a specialty of their choosing, including, but not limited to orthopedics, breast surgery, neurosurgery, ENT and ophthalmology.
Pediatrics
Students can expect to spend the eight weeks of their pediatric rotation on the inpatient pediatric service at Baptist East, the newborn nursery and a community-based pediatric outpatient clinic.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
This eight-week rotation gives students a comprehensive experience in OB/GYN, exposing them to clinic as well as deliveries and surgery at Baptist East. Students also have the opportunity to visit the Montgomery County Health Department’s family planning clinic.
Special Topics
In addition to the required clerkships, Montgomery campus students have the opportunity to take special topic courses unique to MRMC at locations such as Montgomery Advocacy and Outreach, the Alabama Department of Public Health, and a hospital administration/CEO course with Baptist Health leadership. With over 150 community based preceptors and countless elective and acting internship opportunities, the MRMC offers a comprehensive experience for fourth-year students as well.
