Training Program in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology (CMDB)
- National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health
- T32GM146611
- PI: Susan Bellis, Ph.D.
- Associate Directors: Drs. Brad Yoder and Alecia Gross Gutierrez
About our program
The CMDB T32 Training Program provides interdisciplinary predoctoral training in cell, molecular, and developmental biology, building on a longstanding NIH-funded training program at UAB that has been continuously supported since 1984. Combining well-established training strengths with innovative approaches tailored to today’s scientific workforce, the program offers rigorous research training, mentoring, professional development, and instruction in scientific rigor, inclusivity, and communication. As the only UAB T32 program supporting basic cell and molecular biology research independent of a specific disease focus, CMDB provides unique opportunities for outstanding trainees to investigate fundamental biological processes and translate their discoveries into advances in human health.
This program supports 10 predoctoral trainees each year and 1 institutional support position.
Training Program in Brain Tumor Biology
- National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health
- T32NS121721
- PI: Anita Hjelmeland, Ph.D.
- Associate Directors: C. Ryan Miller, MD, PhD, Basic Science Co-Director & Burt Nabors, MD, Program Clinical Co-Director
About our program
The Training Program in Brain Tumor Biology at UAB is an interdisciplinary predoctoral training program designed to prepare PhD and MD/PhD students for careers in basic and translational brain tumor research, with a focus on improving the understanding and treatment of brain tumors. Leveraging the expertise of faculty mentors across 11 departments, the program provides comprehensive training in areas such as tumor biology, therapeutic resistance, immunotherapy, imaging, and drug development through specialized coursework, hands-on research, and experiential learning opportunities. Its goal is to develop the next generation of scientists capable of advancing innovative therapies and improving outcomes for patients with brain tumors.
This program supports 3 predoctoral trainees each year and 1 institutional support.
Training Program in Immunologic Diseases and Basic Immunology
- National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health
- T32AI007051
- PI: Laurie Harrington, Ph.D.
- Associate Director: Randy Cron, MD, PhD
About our program
The Immunologic Diseases and Basic Immunology T32 Training Program at UAB is one of the institution’s longest-standing NIH-funded training programs, with continuous support since 1976, when UAB first received funding to support training in allergic and immunologic diseases and basic immunity. The program provides interdisciplinary training for predoctoral and postdoctoral scientists in both fundamental and translational immunology, drawing on expertise in cellular and molecular immunology, infectious diseases, transplantation, neuroimmunology, bioinformatics, and immune-mediated disorders. Through close collaboration between basic scientists and clinician-investigators, trainees gain rigorous research experience and exposure to human disease, preparing them for successful careers in biomedical research, medicine, and biotechnology.
This program supports 5 predoctoral trainees and 3 postdoctoral trainees each year.
