Ashraf F. Fouad, DDS, MS, professor and chair of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, has been honored with the prestigious Journal of Endodontics (JOE) Award. The accolade was presented by Dr. Ken M. Hargreaves, Editor-in-Chief of the JOE, during the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) annual meeting in Boston, recognizing Dr. Fouad's 15 years of dedicated service on the Editorial Board Committee.
Fouad's service on the JOE Editorial Board has been characterized by unwavering dedication and substantial contributions to the field of endodontic research and literature. His leadership and insights have played a crucial role in maintaining the journal's high standards. Although he concluded his term on the Editorial Board at the end of 2024, his influence endures. Notably, the Basic Science: Biology category of the annual JOE Paper of the Year Awards has been renamed in his honor as the Ashraf Fouad Basic Science Paper-of-the-Year Award.
“Dr. Fouad’s 15 years of service to the Journal of Endodontics have profoundly shaped the publication into a global leader in endodontic research,” Hargreaves said. “Through his editorial vision, scientific rigor, and deep commitment to advancing the field, he elevated the Journal’s impact and nurtured a culture of excellence that will benefit clinicians, researchers, and patients for generations to come.”
In addition to this accolade, Fouad gave two invited presentations at the annual meeting including Systemic Disease and Endodontics and Unraveling the Immunologic Puzzle: Exploring the Impact of Immunology on Apical Periodontitis, a panel presentation with Professor Elisabetta Cotti from University of Cagliari, Italy.
Fouad was recently appointed as chair of the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs (CSA). He began his yearlong term in October 2024, after serving as a member of the council since 2021. As chair, Fouad leads the CSA in providing critical scientific information to the dental profession and the public, guiding various ADA scientific programs and centers.
He currently serves as professor and chair of the Department of Endodontics at the UAB School of Dentistry. His extensive career includes roles as an educator, researcher, and clinician, with numerous publications and accolades to his name.
