About Us
Welcome to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The department provides an excellent learning environment for both undergraduate and graduate students and is proud to be part of UAB, one of the nation’s top universities recognized as an “R1: Doctoral Universities – Highest Research Activity” institution in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Strong Undergraduate Programs
Our B.S. in Computer Science program is accredited by ABET, one of the most widely recognized accreditors of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology.
The department is home to the interdisciplinary B.A. in Computer Science program, which is designed for students interested in combining a strong foundation in computer science with a broad-based education in another discipline, including business and liberal arts. Graduates of the B.A. program develop a versatile, T-shaped knowledge base that prepares them for the rapidly evolving demands of today’s workforce.
The department also offers the interdisciplinary B.S. in Bioinformatics jointly with the Heersink School of Medicine Informatics Institute, the Department of Genetics, and the Department of Biology. This major trains students in computational analysis of biological data and prepares them for careers involving genome sequencing, gene expression studies, proteomics, metabolomics, and precision medicine applications.
In addition, we offer the B.S. in Digital Forensics program jointly with the J. Frank Barefield, Jr. Department of Criminal Justice. Students gain the knowledge and practical skills necessary to discover, recover, analyze, and present digital evidence related to cybercrime and other illegal activities.
Flexible Graduate Programs
At the graduate level, our Ph.D. program has continued to grow steadily since it was established in 1972. We also offer three master’s programs:
- M.S. in Computer Science (provides students with opportunities to develop expertise in artificial intelligence, cyber security, software systems, and other emerging computing fields)
- M.S. in Cyber Security (jointly offered with the J. Frank Barefield, Jr. Department of Criminal Justice)
- M.S. in Artificial Intelligence (prepares graduate students for professional careers in artificial intelligence, machine learning, intelligent systems, and data-driven technologies)
All three M.S. programs are designed with flexibility to support the needs of full-time, part-time, domestic, and international students. We also offer certificate programs in specialized areas of computing and cyber security.
Faculty & Research
Building on our strong tradition of scholarly research, department faculty continue to advance the boundaries of knowledge in several focused focused research areas, including cyber security, artificial intelligence, data science and analytics, biomedical applications, cloud computing, high-performance computing, Internet of Things, and advanced cyber infrastructures.
Our faculty research has been supported by major federal funding agencies and leading technology companies. We also maintain active collaborations with researchers from universities, industry partners, healthcare organizations, and government agencies.
