Simulation News


IMSH 300UAB sent 29 faculty, staff, and students to the 19th Annual International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) which was held in San Antonio, Texas from January 27 – January 30. Attendees came from the SON, SOM, SHP, OIPS, and the Pediatric Simulation Center at Children’s of Alabama. IMSH is sponsored by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) which is the accrediting body for simulation centers around the globe.

OIPS delivered four presentations - a workshop on interprofessional simulation design using the TeamSTEPPS® framework, a procedural skills workshop, a panel discussion on In Situ simulation, and a Hot Topic presentation on data collection and administration.

Three individuals from UAB currently serve in leadership positions for SSH and were recognized at the conference.

  • April Belle, MSN, RN was awarded for her service and dedication to the Society for Simulation in Healthcare as Nominations Officer of the Hospital Based Simulation Programs Section.
  • Penni Watts, PhD, RN, CHSE-A serves as Chair of the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator-Advanced Committee (CHSE-A).
  • Marjorie Lee White, MD, MPPM, MA, CHSE serves as Vice Chair of the Safety II and Resilience Affinity group.

Several faculty were also invited to participate in specials sessions. Nancy Tofil, MD, MEd served as a moderator for Professor Rounds in the Research Poster Session. Michelle Brown, PhD, MLS served as a moderator for two Hot Topics presentations, and Marjorie Lee White, MD, MPPM, MA, CHSE served as a panelist for the “To Err is Human” documentary.

Additionally, Penni Watts, PhD, RN, CHSE-A, Dawn Taylor Peterson, PhD, and Marjorie Lee White, MD, MPPM, MA, CHSE were recognized for their leadership in simulation faculty development by incoming SSH President KT Waxman. Their work was featured in a presentation on Redesigning Faculty Development to meet the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Standards.
