Katelin Holmes, D.O., a breast surgeon at Infirmary Health in Fairhope, Alabama, and a clinical assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery, performed the first laparoscopic, FDA-approved nipple-sparing mastectomy in the United States on April 18, 2025. The novel procedure utilizes smaller incisions in place of what typically is a much more invasive procedure — potentially shortening recovery times and decreasing complications.
Holmes is one of a small select group of surgeons globally to receive specialized training for this technique in Amsterdam, where 12 surgeons worldwide provided training and laboratory opportunities. A board-certified surgeon, Holmes is currently the only provider in Alabama performing this specific laparoscopic nipple-sparing procedure and is the only fellowship-trained breast surgeon in Baldwin County.
“I am honored to bring this technique to our patients across the state of Alabama,” Holmes said. “This minimally invasive approach preserves healthy tissue while reducing other potential impacts — leading to a faster recovery and overall better quality of life. This procedure and the technologies we strive to implement for our patients represent our commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes through innovation and continued education.”
