
Two prestigious master’s programs in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s College of Arts and Sciences have earned top 10 national rankings from Fortune, reinforcing UAB’s reputation for academic excellence and leadership in graduate education.
The Master of Science in Computer Science program achieved No. 3 ranking among the nation’s Best In-Person Master’s in Computer Science programs, and the Master of Science in Cyber Security program received a No. 10 spot in the Best Master’s in Cybersecurity category.

This prestigious distinction underscores our commitment to excellence and innovation in graduate education,” said Yuliang Zheng, Ph.D., chair of the UAB Department of Computer Science. “The Department offers students opportunities to collaborate on solving real-world problems, highlighting the importance of integrating the best computing techniques in a holistic manner.”
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 350,000 computer and information technology job openings each year. Students in the Department of Computer Science are provided a collaborative educational experience that emphasizes important tools that are significant in the field of cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence and software development.
UAB’s cyber security graduate program takes an interdisciplinary approach, equipping graduates with the skills needed for impactful careers in network and cloud security, blockchain, and cyber risk management.
The UAB computer science graduate program provides students with advanced expertise in computing, empowering them to tackle complex computational challenges in science and engineering with a deeper and broader perspective.
“The M.S. in Computer Science and M.S. in Cyber Security programs at UAB provide both cutting-edge knowledge and skills in generative AI, cyber security, blockchain, data analytics and AI-assisted software development, while steeping students in essential soft skills like teamwork and technical communication,” Zheng said. “We provide generous support to student organizations, helping students expand their technical knowledge beyond regular classes and connect with future employers.
