Young children can learn new words and enjoy art and music activities Saturday, Aug. 1, with Vocabby’s World in the Titusville neighborhood.
Vocabby’s World is a free community vocabulary program for kids, sponsored by the PNC Foundation and presented by ArtPlay, part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Center for the Arts. All children ages birth to 5, and their families or guardians, are welcome. The program is designed for children and their caregivers and supports early childhood development during these important formative years.
Join Vocabby the taxicab mascot and ArtPlay friends in new adventures each month as they take pre-K children on a journey to learn vocabulary words through song, movement and creative play. Through the adventures of Vocabby, pre-K learners “travel” around the world while building vocabulary through arts and science integration. Each session features hands-on activities that spark curiosity and creativity.
Vocabby’s World provides free books, curriculum and art materials to reinforce the new vocabulary learned. Each lesson is themed and features words describing topics like weather, activities, animals and more. The theme for August is “The One and Only Me.”
The Vocabby’s World program meets at two Birmingham locations:
- Every other first Saturday in Titusville’s Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, 1101 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, in the Early Learning Center located inside the rotunda at the rear of the church.
- The third Saturday of each month at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 139 54th St. North.
Please arrive by 10:15 a.m. to register. Programs usually have between 15 and 50 children with their families. Vocabby’s World will present “The One and Only Me” at Woodlawn Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 15. Read more about Vocabby’s World and see all upcoming sessions.
In the last three years, Vocabby’s World programming expanded significantly thanks to ongoing partnerships with Harris Early Learning Center, local Head Start and Early Head Start centers, the Woodlawn Street Market, IMPACT grant families, and local pre-K schools. In 2024-2025, Vocabby’s World expanded into the Titusville community through its partnership with UAB Live HealthSmart Alabama, helping serve more than 1,344 children across the Greater Birmingham area. Since its start in 2016, Vocabby’s World programming has reached nearly 17,000 participants.
