Joshua D. Stein, M.D., M.S., is a board-certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist providing comprehensive care for patients with glaucoma and other optic nerve disorders. He holds multiple leadership and academic appointments at the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, including the Susan and Dowd Ritter/RPB Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology Research and Vice Chair for Research in Ophthalmology. Additionally, Stein serves as Associate Dean for Data Sciences at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine.

Stein earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed his ophthalmology residency at New York University, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in glaucoma at Duke University. He also holds master’s degrees in Evaluative Clinical Sciences from Dartmouth University and Health and Health Care Research from the University of Michigan. With nearly two decades of clinical experience, he brings extensive expertise in the medical, laser, and surgical management of glaucoma, with a focus on individualized treatment strategies designed to preserve vision and quality of life.

In his clinical practice at UAB Callahan Eye, Stein specializes in the long-term management of glaucoma and complex optic nerve disease, emphasizing early detection, evidence-based intervention, and continuity of care. He works closely with patients to develop tailored treatment plans that balance disease control with functional vision goals and patient preferences.

As Chief Data Officer of SOURCE (the Sight Outcomes Research Collaborative), a big data consortium of U.S. academic ophthalmology departments that is based at UAB, in addition to his clinical responsibilities, Stein is an internationally recognized physician-scientist whose research leverages large-scale health data, advanced analytics, and emerging technologies to improve eye care delivery and outcomes. His work focuses on expanding access to eye care, optimizing treatment pathways, and advancing the use of data science in ophthalmology to improve patient outcomes.
