The UAB Department of Surgery hosted an in-depth research retreat this April. The event brought together faculty, trainees, and staff for a day full of learning, collaboration, and innovation across each of the nine divisions of the department.

Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair of the UAB Department of Surgery Herbert Chen, M.D., opened the morning session and, over a total of 22 presentations, faculty discussed their research interests, findings, and next steps, while engaging in constructive dialogue with attendees. Also attending were invited guests, Michael Longaker, M.D., MBA, Deane P. and Louise Mitchell Professor in the School Medicine at Standford University, and Robert Kimberly M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives in the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine.

Sessions from the symposium featured a wide range of topics including: cancer therapeutics, acute kidney injury, trauma, health literacy, pediatric oncology, microbial-based therapeutics, and more.

“We’re proud of the creative, thoughtful work being done across our department and are grateful to everyone who made the day such a success,” said James George, Ph.D., UAB Department of Surgery Vice Chair of Research. “Events like this show the heart of our department and exemplify our shared commitment to improving care.”
