Benjamin Greene, M.D., has been promoted from associate professor to professor in the UAB Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, effective Oct. 1, 2025.
“Dr. Greene exemplifies the dedication, innovation, and mentorship that define our department’s mission,” said Justin Turner, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair, John S. Odess Endowed Chair in the UAB Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. “We acknowledge his outstanding contributions in surgical excellence, research, and education, and we are fortunate to have his leadership guiding the next generation of otolaryngologists.”
Greene, who serves as the Residency Program Director and Co-Director of the UAB Facial Nerve Program, joined the UAB Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery faculty as an assistant professor in July 2014. He earned his medical degree from the State University of New York in Buffalo and completed his residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. After that, he completed a fellowship at UAB in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery before joining the UAB Otolaryngology faculty.
Greene’s research has focused on enhancing surgical precision and cancer detection in head and neck oncology. He has additionally led clinical trials using fluorescence-guided surgery and optical imaging agents to improve tumor visualization during procedures such as transoral robotic surgery. His research also explores surgical safety, reconstruction techniques, and the impact of systemic factors like COVID-19 on medical training. He also leads a team of experts in research regarding facial paralysis and treatment and has served on numerous university and hospital committees during his tenure at UAB, most recently graduating from the UAB Healthcare Leadership Academy.
As an educator, Greene is actively involved in teaching medical students and residents with a focus on head and neck surgery, reconstructive microsurgery, and endocrine disorders, leading case-based learning sessions and lectures on thyroid and parathyroid diseases as well as teaching specialized courses such as surgical and clinical experiences in otolaryngology.
As director of the UAB Otolaryngology residency program, Greene leads efforts to train residents in hands-on surgical experiences across all subspecialties, including head and neck cancer, pediatric ENT, and endocrine surgery, as well as clinical exposure and participation in research and academic development.
In the clinical space, Greene co-directs the UAB Facial Nerve Clinic along with Rene Myers, M.D., of the Department of Surgery. The Facial Nerve Clinic is the first and only program of its kind in Alabama, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of facial nerve disorders such as paralysis or weakness caused by conditions like Bell’s palsy, tumors, trauma, or surgery. The clinic uses a team-based approach, combining experts in surgery, therapy, and advanced imaging to offer personalized care.
