Shapshak is the associate residency program director, as well as the program director for the neurocritical care fellowship. She has been active nationally in professional organizations dedicated to education in neurology, and has served in several leadership positions. She is a past chair of the Fellowship Directors’ Section of the Neurocritical Care Society and currently serves on the Neurocritical Care and Trauma Advisory Council for the Society for Neurological Surgeons' Committee on Advanced Subspecialty Training, and on the Neuroscience Steering Committee of the Society for Critical Care Medicine.

This award honors the spirit of leadership, innovation, and dedication that drives progress in the field of neurology.

“It was quite an honor to be selected for this award, and I am grateful to the organizing committee for the opportunity,” Shapshak said.

Shapshak was nominated by David Standaert, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair, John N. Whitaker Endowed Chair, in the Department of Neurology. Standaert highlighted her outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to furthering the department's mission.

"Dr. Shapshak is widely recognized as an outstanding neuro-critical care physician,” Standaert said. “She also serves as associate program director for the neurology residency, and the AUPN Faculty Leadership Award recognizes her excellence in helping to lead this vital training program, which is developing neurologists for the future of Alabama and beyond."

The AUPN was founded in 1967 and became officially incorporated in 1968.

Its creation aimed to support the development of academic neurology by fostering growth in education, research, and clinical care initiatives.

From the beginning, AUPN has served as a collaborative forum for chairs of neurology departments or divisions at accredited medical schools in the U.S. and comparable institutions in Canada to exchange ideas, pursue academic goals, and address key challenges facing the field.
