The UAB Department of Neurology welcomed Felicia Hataway, M.D., to the faculty as assistant professor in the Division of Cerebrovascular Disease in July 2025.
Hataway earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and her master’s degree in pharmacology, both from the University of Mississippi. She then earned her M.D. from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and went on to complete her Vascular Neurology Fellowship at UAB. Before pursuing medicine, she began her career in research, focusing first on drug discovery and design, and later shifting to clinical and translational science.
Hataway shares her passion for neurology and commitment to empowering patients through education and compassionate care.
What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
Hataway: Initially, I was drawn to Neurology because it encompasses the full spectrum of human function. Ultimately, Vascular Neurology was the best fit for me and the area where I could make the most significant impact.
What aspects of your new role here are you most excited about?
Hataway: I’m most excited about becoming more involved in multidisciplinary care and working to improve our processes, which will hopefully improve patient outcomes.
What are your goals for making an impact through both your teaching and patient care in this role?
Hataway: My goal is to foster a culture committed to holistic care. That means ensuring research, clinical expertise, compassion, and teaching reach every team member, from patients to students, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, and providers at all levels. Everyone should feel valued and essential to the success of our shared mission.
