Maria Jones-Muhammad, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurobiology. She joined UAB after earning her Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.jones muhammadMaria Jones-Muhammad, Ph.D.

As a member of the Lubin Lab, her current research examines how exposure to cannabidiol (a compound found in cannabis) during pregnancy might influence brain development in offspring, with a particular focus on how these effects may differ between males and females. She also investigates the potential of ketones—natural compounds produced when the body burns fat—in improving memory loss associated with aging.

Can you explain the focus of your current research?

My research focuses on investigating how exposure to cannabidiol in utero affects offspring neurodevelopment and assessing the sex-specific effects of this exposure on genetic, epigenetic, and behavioral outcomes. I also explore the use of ketone bodies on restoring age-related memory loss.

Why did you choose UAB?

While searching for an institution to complete my postdoctoral training, I searched for neuroscientists whose research interests aligned with my own. This search led me to Dr. Farah Lubin's lab where I was impressed by her credentials and contributions to the scientific community. After visiting UAB's campus and learning more about the environment outside of her lab, I felt the support postdocs receive at UAB would be beneficial for my growth and development as a scientist.

How has your time at UAB helped you grow?

I have met several postdocs and students within and outside of my department from different backgrounds with various career goals. I've also had the opportunity to engage with phenomenal scientists from around the world during my time at UAB. Being around individuals from various walks of life who have the same goal of contributing to the body of knowledge relating to the onset of disease and identifying methods for alleviating health challenges inspires me to grow and learn all that I can while completing my postdoctoral training.

What are your long-term career goals, and how does your current research align with them?

My goal is to run my own independent research program focused on identifying how parental behaviors affect offspring development. My current research is a foundation for establishing the preliminary research needed to build on my future work as a PI.

In what ways has being a part of the Lubin Lab shaped your career?

Dr. Lubin and her lab have provided me with an environment that encourages me to do great science and feel part of a community. Her mentorship allows me the freedom to complete my projects as well as serve as a mentor for other trainees within the lab. I am learning the dedication and persistence it takes to run a research lab and balance some of the responsibilities required to do such. The training that I have received thus far is preparing me face the difficulties that may arise in my future lab while ensuring all my future lab members receive the support needed to do great work.
