U.S. News & World Report ranked UAB Hospital as the No. 1 hospital in Alabama and the Birmingham metro area while naming several of its specialties as top-ranking in the nation.
According to the 2025-2026 rankings released in July, UAB Medicine ranked nationally in five adult specialties and high performing in seven other specialties including diabetes and endocrinology.
Overall, UAB Medicine earned a high-performing rating in 19 adult procedures and conditions, underscoring its comprehensive excellence in patient care.
The diabetes and endocrinology specialty rating is based on analysis of clinical classifications including patient outcomes, patient volume, patient experience, nurse staffing, and advanced clinical technologies. The top 10% within the specialty are considered high performing.
Faculty and staff in the UAB Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism are integral to the hospital’s high-performing diabetes and endocrinology clinic in their roles as physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, and staff members.
“This high rating is a testament to the hard work of our providers, nurses, and staff who care for patients with diabetes and other endocrinology disorders,” said Fernando Ovalle, M.D., director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism and an associate director of the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center (UCDC). “Every person in the division plays a role in our mission to provide our patients with comprehensive, excellent care. We are grateful for their determination and dedication.”
Several faculty members within the division are also physician-scientists in the UCDC, who work to discover, develop, and test curative therapies for diabetes and other metabolic diseases.
UCDC Director Anath Shalev, M.D., pointed out that UAB patients uniquely benefit from the collaborative environment of the UCDC and the division and get access to innovative treatment approaches and new clinical trials because of this exceptional partnership.
“As part of the No. 1 ranked hospital in Alabama, the UAB diabetes clinic is consistently recognized as high performing, year after year, and the UCDC is proud to support their clinical efforts through cutting-edge research aimed to improve the lives of those with diabetes in Alabama and beyond,” Shalev said.
