UAB Announces Plan to Tackle Rural Physician Shortage
L to R: BCBS Executive VP Dow Briggs, MD, SOM Associate Dean of Rural and Primary Care William Curry, MD, and BCBS President and CEO Tim VinesThe School of Medicine and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama have created a scholarship program to increase the number of doctors practicing in rural areas of the state. BCBS has given UAB $3.6 million to train a total of 60 primary care physicians over five years. The physicians will then return to practice in an Alabama county with a primary care shortage after they complete their residencies. The scholarship will pay the tuition of 12 third and fourth-year students each year.

This occasion gave us the opportunity to look at our mission areas together and celebrate each other’s outstanding efforts and advancements in patient care, education and research. Cardio-Oncology Clinic Enhances Cancer Care
L to R: Garima Arora, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease); Carrie Lenneman, MD (Associate Professor, Cardiovascular Disease); Riem Hawi, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease)Since officially opening in January, the Cardio-Oncology Clinic has improved access for patients with cancer diagnoses, reducing the average wait time for a new appointment from 21 to nine days. The clinic’s primary goal is to provide cardio-protective treatment for patients during cancer treatment, which often involve therapies that can negatively impact cardiovascular function. Lead clinician Carrie Lenneman, MD (Associate Professor) is working with Garima Arora, MD (Assistant Professor) and Riem Hawi, MD (Assistant Professor), all from the Division of Cardiovascular Disease. Cardio-Oncology Clinics are held at both TKC and the VA.
Annual Fiesta Ball Supports Young Cancer Investigators
Tiffany Carson, PhD (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine)Thanks to a Young Investigators’ grant provided by the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Young Supporters Board, Tiffany Carson, PhD (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine) was able to successfully compete for NIH funding to explore colorectal cancer disparities.
