UAB Medical Students Celebrate 2025 Match DayOn Friday, March 21, medical schools across the country celebrated 2025 Match Day. The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program joined in the excitement by welcoming 44 interns to train here. The program matched 37 Categorical, 4 Med-Peds, 2 ABIM Research Pathway, and 1 Med-Genetics trainees from 21 medical schools. The new interns will join UAB this summer.

Desai is PI for OPTIMATCH Project

Aakash Desai, MD, MPH, will serve as PI leading an interdisciplinary team of researchers to build, validate, and deploy OPTIMATCH (Oncology Patient-Tailored Inclusion Matching using Artificial Trial-Criteria Computation Heuristics). The tool aims to improve clinical trial access and enrollment rates for cancer patients throughout Alabama.

Lertwilaiwittaya Dubbed GENEius by ACMG

Internal Medicine resident Pong Lertwilaiwittaya, M.D., won the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics' 2025 GENEius Challenge Award, a Jeopardy-style competition where genetics counselors compete for fun, prize money, and a trophy. Congrats, Pong!

We are thrilled to welcome Assistant Professor Jayasree Jonnadula, M.D., to the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Dr. Jonnadula specializes in diabetes, thyroid, and other endocrine conditions. She will see patients at TKC, UAB Med West, Cooper Green, and the 1917 Clinic.

Shahid Wins Sarnoff Fellowship

Abdulla Shahid, a third-year medical student at UAB, has been selected as a 2025–26 Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellow. He is the first UAB student to receive this prestigious honor. The competitive program offers medical students a fully funded year of CV research under the mentorship of leading scientists in the field. His mentor is Dr. Pankaj Arora.
