Starting in May 2026, files that are deleted from OneDrive will no longer appear in your computer’s local Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (macOS). The change is being made by Microsoft.
What’s changing?
- When you delete a file from OneDrive, it will be recoverable only from the OneDrive or SharePoint Recycle Bin on the web.
- Deleted files will remain available there for up to 93 days.
What’s not changing?
- Deleting files that are stored only on your device still works the same way.
- Files On‑Demand behavior remains unchanged.
Why this change is happening
- Improves sync performance
- Makes file recovery more reliable by using one official recycle bin in the cloud
What you need to know If you accidentally delete a OneDrive file, go to OneDrive on the web to restore it.
