The Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate and Professional Studies (IGPS) is excited to announce a new graduate certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

The new Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TLHE) graduate certificate replaces two CIRTL-associated teaching certificates that will be closing fall 2025. The new TLHE extends the option for interested students to pursue a graduate certificate focused on teaching and learning in higher education.

Dr. Heather Ammons, lead instructor for the program, indicates that the coursework will be relevant for teaching in all disciplines and higher education learning environments. “The program blends theoretical knowledge and practical application,” says Dr. Ammons, “developing expertise in teaching and learning relevant across all disciplines, learning formats, and institutional types.” The certificate is 15 credit hours, with four required courses and one, three-credit-hour elective. Course offerings will begin in spring 2026.

Dr. David Schneider, Interim Dean of the Graduate School strongly supports this new certificate.  “The methodology behind teaching and learning assessment is not obvious to anyone. This certificate will empower new and experienced instructors to improve their educational skills and positively impact their students. Whether you are a student, postdoc, faculty, or staff member, these skills will directly benefit your future career in education.”

Courses in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education are offered in standard letter grading format and may be incorporated into the MA/MS Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies degree, also offered through IGPS. Further details about all IGPS programs, including course offerings and admission requirements, can be found on the IGPS website.
