The UAB School of Dentistry has named Stephen Abernathy as its new Senior Director of Development II, effective October 6. Abernathy brings more than 25 years of combined professional and educational experience including over 10 years of professional fundraising experience at the University of Alabama, where he most recently served as Associate Senior Director of Development for its College of Education.
Throughout his career, Abernathy has led successful fundraising initiatives, cultivated major gifts, and helped establish enduring philanthropic partnerships. His work has included developing donor engagement strategies, collaborating with alumni boards, and supporting capital projects and scholarship programs that reflect institutional priorities.
“I’m honored to join the UAB School of Dentistry and excited to be part of a team with such engaged alumni and supporters,” said Abernathy. “The school’s legacy of excellence and its commitment to advancing oral health across Alabama and beyond deeply resonate with me.”
In his new role, Abernathy will lead fundraising strategy and alumni engagement for the School of Dentistry, including oversight of the Dental Alumni Association and its Executive Council. He will work closely with Dean Nico Geurs, faculty, alumni leadership, and Advancement colleagues to cultivate philanthropic support for students, faculty, and strategic initiatives.
“My goal is to help strengthen philanthropic partnerships that support students, faculty, and innovative care,” Abernathy added. “I look forward to working collaboratively to expand opportunities and elevate the school’s impact in the communities we serve.”
Abernathy holds a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Consumer Sciences, both from the University of Alabama. He has completed philanthropic training programs at Dartmouth College and UA, and has served on boards including UA Adapted Athletics and the Druid City Business League.
