Lee Meadows, Ph.D., associate professor in the UAB School of Education and co-director of UABTeach, has been appointed co-chair for the Alabama State Department of Education Strategic Planning Committee on Science.
As co-chair of the committee, Meadows will help evaluate core issues related to Alabama’s student achievement challenges, examine content expectations for teachers and plan for recruitment of talented science teachers.
“Science taught well makes a big impact on Alabama’s children,” Meadows said. “It shows them the wonders and beauty of the natural world and prepares them for life and work in a modern society. I’m honored to help lead this next major step for science education in Alabama, and thankful for UAB’s critical support of the sciences and science education.”
The committee will also compare Alabama’s content expectations for students against those of the most educationally advanced nations, research promising models to raise student achievement, and develop a plan to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of science in Alabama.
In his work at UAB, Meadows focuses on science teacher preparation and science education reform in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. He has also taught high school chemistry, physics and physical science, and college chemistry, general teaching methods and science methods.
