African American Studies

When Brianna Dotson walks across the commencement stage, she will graduate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a multidisciplinary academic focus, earning a major in Psychology and minors in African American Studies and Public Health.  Here, she reflects with CAS on her college experience.

That is what University of Alabama at Birmingham alumna Traci Jones is able to provide as Park Ranger for the A.G. Gaston Motel, located within Birmingham’s Civil Rights District.

The African American Studies program in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s College of Arts and Sciences includes courses examining the lasting impact of music, movies, and television, from depictions of racial stereotypes to expressions of cultural pride.

Hip Hop Forum is one of UAB’s many events to celebrate Black History Month through education, outreach and engagement.

Speakers for “A Tale of Two Cities: Atlanta and Birmingham During the Civil Rights Movement” will shed light on how city governments, civil society leaders and urban geographies can advance or obstruct racial justice and human rights.
